Java Obsidian |
|
Obsidian is silica-rich volcanic glass, formed when magma flows cool, the result of lava coming in contact with water. Often, the lava pours into a lake or ocean and is supercooled producing a glassy textured rock. Comprised mostly of silicon dioxide, the impurities in the mix gift Obsidian its colour properties. Obsidian can also contain miniature air bubbles, flow banding, trapped minerals and captive flora and fauna.Trapped air bubbles are sometimes stretched and elongated to give the appearance of threadlike inclusions, or silky spiderweb effects.
Obsidian comes in many colours, the most widely known being black, brown and green. Blue is rarer, yellow, pink and purple more so.
All the plugs offered here are hand-made from selected boulders of Java Obsidian. The rocks are broken into small nuggets, and each is analysed for flow lines, banding, trapped bubbles and other exotic inclusions prior to manufacture. The Obsidian rough has been examined by geologists and deemed to be volcanic. Not every boulder can be authenticated, and it is an impossible task to determine if some rocks were melted in a furnace rather than by volcanicity, but all pieces are obtained in good faith.
